Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, provide support in preparing and reporting financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory requirements.  Responsible for daily Accounts Receivable activities. Assists with all month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Serve as a representative of the company, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions.
  2. Work effectively with other team members to meet monthly department deadlines. 
  3. Extract and organize data from a variety of databases for reporting and reviewing purposes. 
  4. Perform required research to assist co-workers and managers with questions and problems concerning the general ledger.
  5. Accurately prepare and process journal entries and provide precise supporting documentation.
  6. Ownership over select general ledger accounts, which includes preparing journal entries, reviewing account activity, preparing account reconciliations, and performing account analyses. 
  7. Assure regular month-end checklists are completed proficiently according to accounting timeline.
  8. Provide supervision to accounting staff as part of Assistant Controller support duties. 
  9. Provide support in the day-to-day accounting functions for the AR and Inventory departments. 
  10. Design and implement billing procedures based on customer fuel contracts. Review or prepare monthly billings for such contracts, ensuring accurate billing according to contract terms. Includes review of required State and Federal tax consequences. 
  11. Download and record all transactions from the billing system at month end into the general ledger. 
  12. Prepare customer receivable and balance sheet account schedules for the annual external audit.
  13. Travel throughout Alaska for inventory observations, as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Associates Degree and five years of progressive work experience entering data and reconciling in computerized accounting system, or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  3. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  4. A working knowledge of word processing programs and a familiarity with multiple accounting systems is required.
  5. Ability to maintain good working relationships, understand the need for a high level of confidentiality and maintain confidentiality, work under minimum supervision and must possess analytical and problem-solving skills.
  6. Must be able to operate basic office equipment such as computers, 10-key calculators, printers, copiers, and fax machines.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The work environment is in a busy office setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft.
